Washington, D.C. | January 31st – In HIT Strategies’ first BlackTrack (survey of Black registered voters) post the 2022 midterms, a majority (59%) say President Biden should run for President in 2024, even before an official campaign announcement. This includes 66% of Black voters 50 and older and 55% of Black voters under 50. And 74 percent of Black voters approve of President Biden’s job performance.
Additionally, the January BlackTrack adds new political figures to the favorability tracker, including newly elected Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Raphael Warnock, businessman Elon Musk, and Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.
Racism: An Important Issue for Black Voters
When asked about the top three issues that are most important to them, 37% of Black voters selected “racism and discrimination,” coming in second behind “Inflation and cost of living” (51%). Gun violence” (32%), jobs and the economy (30%), and “health care” (28%) round out the top five issues.
Power Perception
When asked how much power their vote has to make changes on issues that matter to them, 55% of Black voters felt their vote had power. HIT Strategies’ “vote power” question remains a key tracking question to measure Black voters’ level of political engagement and satisfaction. The number of Black voters who believe their vote has “power” dropped 10 points between October and January.

Attitudes on Political Division and Violence
- 45% of Black voters believe political division will increase, and 44% believe the amount of political violence will increase compared to 2022.
- 45% of Black voters believe the amount of both political division and violence will remain the same in 2023 as it did in 2022.
- 11% believe the amount of political violence will decrease, and 10% believe the division level will decrease from 2022.
This BlackTrack survey was fielded via an online opt-in panel from January 13-16, 2023, with a margin of error of +/-3.1%. The information above represents selected data from the BlackTrack survey.
