In August 2022, HIT Strategies and Black to the Future Action Fund collaborated to survey Black communities in three priority states – California, North Carolina, and Georgia. These polls surveyed a total of 1,200 Black voters in Georgia, North Carolina, and California, including an oversample of 100 Black rural voters in Georgia and North Carolina. In this polling project, we took a deeper dive into our priority states to learn about respondents’ top concerns and what motivates them for the upcoming midterm election and beyond.
As we continue to see the cost of living and inflation go up, Black voters want their elected officials to be more responsive around economic issues – and as we see in Georgia, Black voters are less satisfied when those in power fail to use resources to that end. As the midterm elections draw closer, elected officials and candidates in these states must prioritize economic recovery, protecting voter rights and access, and combating white supremacist violence to be responsive to their Black constituents.
