HIT Democratic Focus Group’s Real-Time Reactions to SCOTUS Roe v. Wade Draft Opinion

Watch: Young Democratic Voters React to Roe Reversal in Real Time

On the evening of May 2nd, as HIT Strategies was conducting its monthly focus groups of Democratic voters, a Supreme Court draft opinion on Roe v. Wade was leaked by POLITICO. In it, the Supreme Court essentially argues to overturn Roe and eliminate reproductive rights and access to an abortion for millions of women in America.

The breaking news was incorporated in the focus group of young Democratic voters already in progress. As stated by HIT founding partner Roshni Nedungadi, the feeling in the room turned to anger and participants feeling upset. She further noted that this action would be channeled into a need to organize, vote, and hold Republicans accountable for this decision.

The following are reactions from the focus group in real time:

One voter stressed that overturning Roe would lead to a higher rate of women harming themselves trying to do their own abortions.
Another voter stated that low-income women and people of color will suffer the most from an abortion ban.
A young voter emphasized the need for men to vote and do what really matters to support reproductive rights.
One woman stated that this will encourage her to organize and make sure everyone around her is registered to vote and will cast their ballot in local elections.
Another woman expressed that those able to take time off from work and have the financial means will be the ones that will always have access to an abortion.
A young Black voter stated that he thinks restrictive access to birth control will be the next step and that ultimately, it’s a woman’s decision and right to have an abortion.
